Postpartum Hair Loss

We love them - their smell, their snuggles, their coos. Their need for us as Mothers is tremendous. Not only is our body recovering from growing a human, it is also trying to rebalance. The mental ups and downs are plenty, while coffee and no sleep often persevere for months (or years for some.) No sleep means less time for our bodies to restore. Did you know our bodies produce more cortisol in the morning hours which is supposed to help us wake up earlier. However, most of us only mildly feel awake once that first taste of that aromatic coffee hits our lips. And breakfast - well. That's not always the first meal of the day is it?
With sleep deprivation, hormonal imbalances and fluctuations, lack of nutrition and higher then normal stress levels - no wonder many of us suffer from hair loss post-partum. I had a friend once say to me how disgusted she was that no health professional discussed or even mentioned how challenging it was on the body AFTER baby. And it's true - not many health care professionals discuss how to take care of yourself after the fact.
Our monthly cycles can also change largely after birth. And if you are closer to 40, the ever so sneaky peri-menopause symptoms creep in. Like sleep disturbances, food cravings and less energy for some. It all impacts your vessel. And if your vessel is not well maintained, your hair can be the very first sign that your body is struggling with imbalances.
From a wellness and trichology focused prospective, if you can grasp the reins and understand what your body could be telling you, you can potentially gain some control back over your hair loss. I wish I knew more about this two years ago. But now it is my goal to help others who are on a hair wellness journey. With 21 years of hair styling, a plethora of wellness self-study and recent recipient of my Practitioners Certification from the International Institute of Trichology - I educate and support my clients to achieve wellness for beautiful, healthy hair.
